Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Macular degeneration is an eye disease that occurs when an area of your eye called the macula begins to deteriorate. The macula is responsible for our central vision and helps us see small, clear details of what’s right in front of us. These details are needed for everyday tasks such as reading, driving, and watching tv. In other words, the macula is very important to our quality of life because it has a direct impact on our vision and our perception.

Causes of Macular Degeneration

AMD can be caused by a variety of factors including age, diet, genetics, and environment. It is also the leading cause of vision loss in adults who are age 50 or older.

The most common symptoms include dark vision, a spot of fuzzy vision, or distorted vision. If left untreated, macular degeneration can eventually cause a loss of central vision. The good news is that regular eye exams can detect macular degeneration that requires treatment and in many cases preserve your vision.

Please keep in mind that the earlier macular degeneration is caught, the more effective your treatment will be.

 

Preventative Measures

As we get older, most of us assume that loss of our primary senses – like vision and hearing, is inevitable. This isn’t the case! As long as you get regular eye check-ups, your eye care provider can catch most eye diseases early and provide treatment before any vision loss occurs. Prevention is key!

Apart from seeing your eye care provider, you can also help prevent the onset and progression of macular degeneration through exercise, proper nutrition (including vitamin intake), and making healthy lifestyle choices.
