What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is actually a group of eye diseases that cause damage to your optic nerve, which is crucial to supplying images to your brain.

Most often, it is caused by extremely high pressure in the front of the eye (aka intraocular pressure). Sadly, many forms of glaucoma come with little to no warning signs or symptoms until significant vision loss starts to occur.

Fortunately, this condition can be caught early through routine eye examinations.  During your comprehensive exam, we will check the optic nerve for signs of glaucoma, measure the intraocular pressure of your eyes, and possibly even perform special imaging of the optic nerve and test its function.

Glaucoma Care and Treatment

Glaucoma care and treatment is not one-size-fits-all. It depends on the type and severity of the disease and may include eye drops, oral medications, laser treatment, and/or surgery.

While the nerve damage caused by glaucoma can’t be reversed, regular checkups and management can help to slow or prevent vision loss. Because glaucoma can worsen, your treatment plan may need to be modified over time. It’s important to remember that while this may be a lifelong disease, it can be controlled with proper care and consistent consultation with your eye doctor.
